When should I change my Porsche's water pump?

Don't ignore your Porsche's water pump. Even if you don't drive your car every day, the water pump in your Porsche engine is in service 24/7. Porsche water pumps should be replaced every 4 to 5 years and/or 48,000 to 60,000 miles to prevent impeller failure that can lead to overheating and cracked cylinder heads due to plastic debris from the water pump impeller becoming lodged in narrow cooling passages. Often cylinder head failures in Porsche M96 engines don't happen immediately following the failure of their Porsche's water pump, but months, if not a year later, leading to intermix where engine oil and coolant mix. Porsche cylinder head replacement is expensive as the cylinder heads cannot be safely repaired, requiring replacement where replacing the water pump in your Porsche Boxster, Cayman, or 911 as part of your preventative maintenance program can prevent large and unexpected expenses. We only use OEM or Genuine Porsche water pumps with plastic impellers (where available) as water pumps with metal impellers, which are much heavier than the composite impeller, are known to fail and can destroy your engine when the water pump's metal impeller makes contact with the block, requiring complete engine replacement!

My Cayenne's coolant pipes are leaking - what can I do to fix it?

The original plastic coolant pipes in 2003-2006 Porsche's V8 Cayenne S and Turbo models deteriorate over time, and all will eventually crack and leak. Porsche recognized this design flaw and released updated aluminum versions of the coolant pipes to supersede the original plastic pipes. If your Cayenne hasn't been updated to aluminum coolant pipes, now is the time to make the change. You should also change the thermostat and install a new water pump at the same time.

How do I change the water pump on my Porsche 1997-2008 Boxster, Cayman, or 911 with the M96 or M97 engine?

Bentley Publishers DIY repair video on how to replace the coolant (water) pump on 1999-2005 Porsche 911 Carrera (996) models should be the first thing you watch before considering taking on a do it yourself water pump change on your Porsche engine. Although there are slight differences between models and years, you'll get the general idea of how to carry out the water pump replacement procedure by watching this video.

Note: When changing our your Porsche Boxster, Cayman, and 911's water pump, it is very important to use a coolant lift system to help prevent air pockets in your Porsche's cooling system that can damage the engine when it overheats. We use and recommend Genuine Porsche coolant or OEM Pentosin Pentofrost coolant/anti-freeze when servicing the cooling system and always use distilled water to reduce cooling system deposits caused by hard water.
