The rear main seal— rear crankshaft seal or RMS—is the working seal against the rotating crankshaft where it exits the rear of the engine and connects with the transmission. The rear main seal is used to prevent oil loss from the rear of an engine.

What rear main seal should I use on my Porsche Boxster, Cayman, or 911 engine

When replacing your IMS bearing, the rear main seal should always be replaced with a Genuine Porsche PTFE rear main seal (RMS). Porsche redesigned the rear main seal for the 97-08 Porsche Boxster, Cayman, and 911 engine several times to address the leak prone design of the original seal. Under no circumstances should any product claiming to add a rear main seal "bearing" or any seal other than a Genuine Porsche seal be used. A leaky rear main seal is not caused by the weight of the dual mass flywheel, but rather from mis-machining of the engine block/case from the factory or if the engine has not been previously fitted with the updated Genuine Porsche PTFE rear main seal. The most current version is a PTFE rear main seal (RMS), part number 0PB-105-249.

How do I replace the rear main seal in my Porsche Boxster, Cayman, or 911 engine?

If the RMS is leaking, the RMS go-no-go tool should be used before fitting a new seal to ensure the leak is not as a result of a defective crankcase. Installation of the rear main seal should be carried out with the Porsche 9699 & 9699/2 RMS tool. Care should be taken to make sure not to touch the new rear main seal during handling and installation.

    When servicing your intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing, it's important to also replace your rear main seal (RMS). The part number has been superseded to an updated PTFE seal that is proven to resolve most leaks. We only recommend using the Genuine Porsche seal - stay away from all other replacement rear main seals. Products that claim to add more support to the crankshaft by adding another "bearing" falsely claim the weight of the dual mass flywheel is the reason for rear main seal leaks, when in fact engines that have been found to have chronic RMS leaks do in fact leaks because they were improperly machined from the factory, requiring engine replacement to correct this condition. This can be checked for using Porsche Tool 9699/1 or with precision measuring tools to ensure there is no more than 0.3mm of runout between the crankshaft and the housing bore into which the RMS is installed. It is also critical that the proper tools are used to install the PTFE seal, as if it is improperly handled or installed, it will fail to seal and will require replacement to correct any leaks as a result of misalignment or if installed to the incorrect depth.
