RND RS Roller IMS Retrofit

RND RS Roller IMS Retrofit

The RND RS Cylindrical Roller IMS Bearing Retrofit for Porsche Boxster and 911 M96 Engines

The RND RS Roller IMS Bearing Retrofit for Porsche Boxster, 996, and early 997 models with the M96 engine is manufactured by RND Engines and distributed by exclusively by SSF Auto Parts. RS Roller Cylindrical Roller Bearing IMS Retrofit Kits sport a 2-year/24,000 miles limited parts warranty with professional installation when required IMS procedure pre-qualification and registration procedures are followed. The recommended service interval for the RND RS Roller IMS Bearing Retrofit kit is 6 years or 75,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The only IMS roller bearing retrofit kit with true thrust control for Porsche Boxster and 911 M96 Engines

Cylindrical bearings provide great lateral load capacity, sacrificing their maximum load cap in thrust (axial movement). The factory used a deep groove ball bearing for this reason. That’s why precise thrust control is crucial for bearing’s longevity and reliability. RND Roller Bearing IMS Retrofit kit is the only cylindrical roller bearing IMS fix on the market that uses a Genuine Koyo bearing featuring proper heat treated, 52100 bearing steel thrust surfaces on both sides to handle thrust load both fore and aft internally, along with an increased number of roller elements for added load capacity. Other competitors make claims of being many times stronger than a ball bearing or that their patented thrust control is superior, but the RND Roller is the only kit that uses a bearing designed to handle these thrust loads with actual ratings you can verify and quantify as provided by the manufacturer of the NUP204E bearing supplied to RND by Koyo. Unlike other commercially available cylindrical roller bearing IMS kits, the RND RS Roller does not require any oil system modifications, so there is no risk of compromising the intermediate shaft or oiling efficiency due to pressure losses. Additionally, the bearing uses positive retention via external snap ring or spiro-loc, where other bearings omit any method of positive retention.

RND RS Roller IMS Bearing Retrofit for Porsche Boxster and 911 (996 and early 997 models)

Why does LN Engineering offer a roller bearing IMS replacement for the Porsche M96 engine?

LN Engineering's wholesale customer SSF Auto Parts was receiving requests for a cylindrical roller bearing IMS kit from the shops they supply. Unhappy with existing commercially available cylindrical roller bearing kits for Porsche Boxster and 911 engines, SSF asked us to supply them a kit. In fact, during development of the IMS Retrofit we had already previously developed a version that utilized a cylindrical roller bearing with thrust ring. However it never made it from testing to production for the primary reason that Porsche chose a ball bearing originally, not a roller bearing. This intermediate shat bearing upgrade became the RND RS Roller IMS Bearing Retrofit kit offered exclusively by LN Engineering and SSF Auto Parts.

How does the RND RS Roller Bearing compare to other ball or roller bearing replacements?

A deep groove ball bearing can handle 50% of total load capacity as thrust. However, roller bearings can only handle 10% of total load as thrust and most cannot handle thrust in both directions. That's why a roller bearing usually is paired with a ball bearing in a transmission, with the ball bearing providing thrust control. The RND roller bearing kit sold by SSF Auto Parts uses a custom expanded load capacity cylindrical roller bearing with integral thrust control that can handle thrust loads in both directions internally- something no other roller bearing IMS kit can do.

The factory single row 6204 bearing used in 2000-2005 Porsche Boxster, 996, and early 997 engines has a dynamic load capacity of 2900 lbs. with thrust max load rating of 1450 lbs. In comparison, the NJ or NU204 cylindrical bearing used in other roller bearing IMS kits has a dynamic load capacity of 3750 lbs. with thrust max load rating of 375 lbs. Although the cylindrical bearing has 29% higher load capacity, in thrust it has only 26% of the capacity of the deep groove 6204 bearing. Claims made by other manufacturers that their roller IMS bearing is 5 times stronger is far from accurate.

The custom cylindrical roller bearing used in the RND RS Roller IMS Bearing Retrofit has a superior dynamic load capacity of 5800 lbs. of which 580 lbs can be supported as thrust. Unlike other roller ims bearing replacements, no additional forced lubrication like a DOF is required with the RND RS Roller IMS Bearing Retrofit kit as the bearing is partially submerged in oil during normal operation.

What tools are required to install the RND RS Cylindrical Roller IMS Bearing upgrade?

The only tool required to install the RND RS Cylindrical Roller IMS Bearing replacement for Porsche Boxster and 911 models with either the dual row or single row IMS bearing is the LN Engineering IMS Pro Tool Kit, part number 106-08.13. No modifications to the engine case or oiling system are required.

Where is the RND RS Cylindrical Roller Bearing Made?

The RND RS Roller IMS bearing kit is manufactured in the USA at our Momence, IL manufacturing facility. We supply Genuine Koyo NUP204E expanded load capacity cylindrical roller bearings made in Japan or Czech Republic (source can vary depending on availability) in our roller IMS bearing upgrade kit which also includes US-made microencapsulated bolts and ARP 12 pt center nut. The RND RS Roller IMS bearing replacement features a triple-lip IMS flange seal and viton o-rings for improved IMS flange sealing.

Why do you offer two different versions of the RND RS Roller IMS Bearing Retrofit?

Like our IMS Retrofit bearing replacement kits, we offer specific versions of our roller ims bearing upgrades depending whether your M96 engine has a factory dual row or single row IMS bearing. Unlike other kits that use an oversized bearing that prevents installation of a bearing circlip or spiroloc to securely retain the new bearing, the RND RS Roller IMS Bearing Retrofit uses a narrower bearing that allows proper retention. The dual row kit uses a spiroloc and the original circlip is used for the single row kit. In Boxster and 996 engines requiring a dual row bearing, a spacer is provided in the kit in that makes up the difference in bearing width.

So what type of IMS bearing replacement should I use?

Some mechanics prefer a roller bearing over a ball bearing, so we provide all the load ratings for our IMS bearings and for other manufacturer's IMS bearings so you can compare the facts and make a decision as to which technology will work best for you.

    Why do IMS bearings fail?

    • Lack of lubrication (sealed bearing was used)
    • Insufficient load capacity (factory single row bearing had high failure rate of 8% according to the Eisen class action lawsuit)
    • The factory did not supply a service interval, replacement, or tools for changing the original bearing out – bearing should have had a service interval!

IMS Retrofit as a preventative maintenance:

    • IMS replacement takes an average of 10-14 hours.
    • Typically coupled with clutch and other maintenance.
    • Engine rebuilds take 60+ hours and can cost tens of thousands of dollars.
    • Engines must be pre-qualified prior to bearing replacement.

What factory bearing does my engine have?

    • 1997-1999: This engine featured a dual row bearing IMS
    • 2000-2001: These engines came from the factory with either a dual row or a single row bearing IMS
    • 2002-2005: This engine featured a single row bearing IMS. Some late production 2005 models will have a non-servicable IMS.
    • 2006-2008: These engines were fitted with a larger bearing that is not serviceable without a complete teardown of the engine.
    • If the engine in your car has been replaced, it will have whatever IMS bearing was in production for that model year of manufacture for the replacement engine.

Need to have someone install your IMS bearing?

If you aren't a do it yourselfer and are planning on having your IMS bearing changed professionally, we recommend checking out Certified Installers as your first resource for this work to be completed. We do not recommend purchasing an IMS Retrofit or IMS Solution intermediate shaft bearing kit from us unless you are doing the work yourself or the shop you are planning on using explicitly asks you to supply the parts. Most shops do not allow customers to bring in their own parts; shops need to make money on both the parts and labor to stay in business, so please purchase your LN products from the shop that is doing the work on your Boxster, Cayman, or 911 to support your local independent Porsche mechanic.
