LN Engineering Adjustable Cylinder Bore Scrubbing Tool for Cleaning and Deglazing
$275.00
Our Cylinder Bore Cleaning Tool is designed to ensure precision cleaning of Nikasil, iron, or steel cylinder bores before assembly, addressing a critical step often overlooked by engine builders. This tool, equipped with specially designed mandrels and high-quality aluminum oxide pads, thoroughly scrubs and cleans the cylinder bore cross-hatch. It effectively removes embedded debris from the honing process, reducing the risk of scratches, improving ring seal, and minimizing blow-by and oil consumption. It can also be used to deglaze cylinder bores.
Please check out the before and after numbers for Nikasil bores in the images – we see similar results with cast iron bores, so if you are measuring your surface finishes prior to cleaning the bores when honing, your numbers are going to be off as shown in the results! It is also interesting to note that the before numbers are what many would consider clean!
Key Features:
Precise Cleaning: Engineered to remove debris from cross-hatch patterns, ensuring a contaminant-free bore for optimal ring seating.
Easy Setup: Select the appropriate mandrel size for your bore, affix the aluminum oxide pad, and you’re ready to go.
Enhanced Performance: Helps avoid cylinder bore streaking and scratching, improving engine durability and performance.
Durable Materials: Includes mandrels that are compatible with our aluminum oxide pads, ensuring a long-lasting and reliable tool for repeated use.
This tool is an essential addition to any engine builder’s toolkit, addressing the often-missed final step in cylinder preparation to ensure your engine build meets the highest standards.
Select the mandrel size based on bore dimensions. Use small mandrels for bores under 95mm and large mandrels for bores 95mm and above.
Attach the Very Fine, Purple Aluminum Oxide Pad (MSC# 70537550, Norton# 66261058361 – Non-Woven Roll: Aluminum Oxide, 4″ Wide, 30′ Long – Very Fine, Purple) to the mandrel by sliding it fully into the slot, ensuring no overlap at the start of the pad to avoid bore drag.
Please note that cylinder bore surface finishes may change after cleaning, so we recommend using a profilometer both before and after cleaning so that you can adjust your honing process.
This is the same tool used by LN Engineering in the manufacture of our Nickies cylinders, block sleeving, and Nikasil cylinder reconditioning. We use Digital Metrology’s TraceBoss+ and a Mitutoyo SJ-210 as well as optical inspection to validate our process.
Assembled in the USA using domestic and imported materials.
Parts washer and hand drill not included. We recommend purchasing a stand alone parts washer as shown to pump ATF through the cylinder bore to effectively wash away contamination that is picked up and removed during the scrubbing process.
Using the ATF as lubricant, run the scotch-brite hone up and down the cylinder with a drill for 2 minutes. Approximately 150-200 rpm and 2 strokes (up & down once) per second is ideal for cleaning the cross-hatching. Repeat this step for 2 more cylinder bores. Each side of scotch-brite should only be used on 3 bores total. Rinse & Clean the 3 cylinders and check the bore with a Kimwipe and denatured alcohol. You should not have any visible contamination on the clean Kimwipes. If you do, repeat the process with a fresh scotch-brite pad.
