Mass Air Flow Sensors

Mass Air Flow Sensors
Genuine Bosch Porsche Mass Air Flow Sensors
Your Porsche’s mass air flow (MAF) sensor is responsible for measuring the amount of air going into your engine which is important to determining the correct air fuel ratio. When the mass air flow sensor fails, often engines will have a rough idle, poor fuel economy, black smoke, hesitation or surging, poor acceleration, or even hard starting. As the mass air flow sensor is critical to fuel delivery, excess fuel will wash down the cylinder bores, leading to increased piston, ring, and cylinder wear that can contribute to cylinder bore scoring common to Porsche 986/987 Boxster, Cayman, and 996/997 911 models with the M96 or M97 engine and other engines with Alusil engine blocks. Although there is no recommended replacement interval like with oxygen sensors, it probably is a good idea to consider replacing your MAF every 60-90k miles. Also, if you are using a washable oil filter, be sure not to over-oil them as this oil can foul the MAF sensor. LN Engineering recommends installing genuine Bosch oxygen sensors for all Porsche models rather than cleaning the sensor, which doesn’t always fix issues associated with a bad mass air flow sensor.
