997 3.8 to 4.0 101mm Nickies Closed Deck Porsche Engine Conversion

For many years, Porsche and other manufacturers have preferred the open deck configuration for their water-cooled, all-aluminum engines. This design enhances cooling, a critical benefit for high-performance engines, compared to the closed deck configuration. However, the open deck's main drawback is the potential for cylinder wall distortion and a decrease in overall rigidity, issues that have been notably problematic with the M96 engine. Nonetheless, LN Engineering's Nickies Porsche engine conversion employs a sleeving technique that maintains the open deck design for bore sizes up to 101mm, without sacrificing durability, strength, or reliability. This is achieved through the use of billet aluminum Nickies sleeves crafted from a special aluminum alloy. This material offers superior strength and thermal conductivity compared to standard factory cast aluminum cylinders.

LN Engineering's Nickies cylinder liner sleeves have effectively addressed the weaknesses of the standard open deck design, boasting a successful history of nearly two decades with about 250 engines being sleeved annually through our unique Porsche engine conversion technique. Notably, the vast majority of Porsche engines modified by LN Engineering using our Nickies involve oversizes rather than the original bore sizes, demonstrating the effectiveness of our method in enhancing engine displacement and power well beyond the factory specifications of a Porsche engine. LN Engineering also provides closed deck engine conversions for Porsche Boxster, Cayman, and 911 models from the 996 and 997 series. While the majority of our clients opt for our traditional open deck Nickies Porsche engine conversions, which support displacements of up to 4.1 liters, there are specific situations where the decrease in cooling efficiency is considered an acceptable compromise for enhanced cylinder stability.

For turbocharged Porsche engines, particularly those with M96 or M97 engines, a closed deck configuration offers advantages. Typically, we advise restricting the bore size to 99mm for supercharged or turbocharged Boxster, Cayman, and 911 engines equipped with Nickies. However, our closed deck conversion permits larger bore sizes up to 101mm, specifically tailored for forced induction setups. Additionally, for naturally aspirated engines requiring bore sizes greater than 102mm, we also offer closed deck conversions to maintain optimal strength and durability without compromise.
