Our complete 986 Boxster and Boxster S water pump kit includes an OEM composite-impeller water pump, water pump gasket, LN Engineering 160°F low-temperature thermostat, thermostat installation tool, thermostat housing gasket, serpentine drive belt, and replacement mounting hardware. Belt selection must match the crankshaft pulley configuration, including vehicles equipped with certain aftermarket underdrive crank pulleys. For 2005–2008 Boxster models (987.1), choose the later 987/997 kit listed below.
Porsche 911 Carrera (996): Model Years 1999–2005
Applicable naturally aspirated Porsche 911 Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, and Targa models in the 996 generation use the Porsche OEM 986/996 Water Pump Kit with 160°F Low-Temperature Thermostat (SKU 996-106-011-57-KIT). The 996 Carrera generation includes the 3.4L and 3.6L water-cooled flat-six applications. For 2005 models, confirm whether the vehicle is a 996 or 997 before ordering, as both generations were sold for that model year.
Exclusions: This 986/996 kit is not for Porsche 911 Turbo, GT2, or GT3 engines. Turbo, GT2, and GT3 models use different engine and cooling-system components and require separate fitment verification.
Porsche Boxster and Boxster S (987.1): Model Years 2005–2008
The second-generation 2005–2008 Porsche Boxster and Boxster S (987.1, also called early 987) use the Porsche OEM 987/997 Water Pump Kit with Gaskets, Belt, Bolts, and 160°F Low-Temperature Thermostat (SKU 997-106-011-06-KIT) for applicable naturally aspirated M96/M97 applications. This is a different water pump kit from the 1997–2004 Boxster 986 kit.
Porsche Cayman and Cayman S (987.1): Model Years 2006–2008
The first-generation Porsche Cayman S (introduced for model year 2006) and Cayman (introduced for model year 2007) through model year 2008 are 987.1 vehicles. For applicable naturally aspirated engines, use the Porsche OEM 987/997 Water Pump Kit with 160°F Low-Temperature Thermostat (SKU 997-106-011-06-KIT). Although both generations are designated 987, the water pump kits differ between the 987.1 and 987.2 models.
Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S (997.1): Model Years 2005–2008
Applicable naturally aspirated Porsche 911 Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera S, Carrera 4S, and Targa vehicles in the 997.1 generation use the Porsche OEM 987/997 Water Pump Kit with 160°F Low-Temperature Thermostat (SKU 997-106-011-06-KIT). The 997.1 designation generally indicates the first-generation 997 Carrera with the M96/M97-family engine. The 2009–2012 997.2 Carrera models use a different kit, while Turbo, GT2, and GT3 models require engine-specific parts.
Porsche Boxster and Cayman (987.2): Model Years 2009–2012
The facelift 987.2 Porsche Boxster, Boxster S, Cayman, and Cayman S models from 2009–2012 use the Porsche 987.2/997.2 Water Pump Kit with Gaskets, Belt, Bolts, and Stock Thermostat (SKU 9A1-106-048-02-KIT) for the listed MA1/9A1-generation engine applications, including the revised base engines and direct-fuel-injected S models. The revised 987.2 cooling system requires a different kit from the earlier 987.1 models.
Thermostat Options: This kit includes a factory-temperature thermostat as standard. An optional low-temperature thermostat is available for track applications. However, it can trigger a check-engine light because the engine may operate below the temperature expected by the engine management system. This does not affect drivability or cause the engine to enter limp mode, but LN Engineering recommends retaining the factory-temperature thermostat for street-driven vehicles.
Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S (997.2): Model Years 2009–2012
Applicable 2009–2012 Porsche 911 Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, and Targa models in the 997.2 generation use the Porsche 987.2/997.2 Water Pump Kit with Stock Thermostat (SKU 9A1-106-048-02-KIT). The 997.2 is not the same cooling-system application as the earlier 997.1, and the two water pump kits are not interchangeable merely because the vehicle is called a 997.
Porsche Boxster and Cayman (981): Model Years 2013–2016
For applicable naturally aspirated Porsche Boxster, Boxster S, Cayman, and Cayman S models in the 981 generation, see the Porsche 2013–2016 911 / Boxster / Cayman Water Pump Kit with Gaskets, Belt, and Bolts (SKU 0PB-121-035-A-KIT). This kit bundles the water pump, mounting hardware, and the appropriate belt option. Unlike the 986/996 or 987.1/997.1 bundles, a 160°F thermostat is not included as standard. Confirm engine and drive-belt configuration before ordering. For GTS, Spyder, GT4, and other specialized versions, contact LN Engineering to confirm the correct application rather than assuming compatibility based on the 981 chassis designation.
Porsche 911 Carrera (991.1): Model Years 2012–2016
For applicable naturally aspirated Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S models of the 991.1 generation, see the Porsche 2013–2016 911 / Boxster / Cayman Water Pump Kit with Gaskets, Belt, and Bolts (SKU 0PB-121-035-A-KIT). The current product listing expressly identifies 2013–2016 911 applications and requires selection of the appropriate serpentine belt based on chassis options. For a 2012 991, Carrera GTS, GT3, Turbo, or other specialized or transition-year model, please contact LN Engineering to confirm fitment. The standard Carrera kit is not necessarily suitable for those applications.
Porsche Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo: Model Years 2003–2006
For 2003–2006 Porsche Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo models equipped with the 4.5L V8 engine, LN Engineering offers the Porsche 2003–2006 Cayenne S/Turbo Water Pump Kit (SKU 948-106-011-04-KIT). The kit includes the water pump, gasket, mounting bolts, and alternator/water-pump drive belt. The kit contains the appropriate water pump, gasket, bolts, and a model-specific drive-belt option. It is not a universal kit for every Cayenne, Panamera, or Macan engine.
These kits cover the specific engines and model years identified above, not every Cayenne, Panamera, or Macan. Other models, including base and diesel versions, may require different components. Please confirm your engine and model year before ordering.
Choosing the Right Water Pump Kit for Your Porsche
After identifying your Porsche in the fitment guide above, consider the thermostat and serpentine drive belt options before ordering. Engine changes and aftermarket modifications can affect the components required.
Each product page provides the contents of its kit and any available options. Review those details to select the correct configuration for your vehicle.
Low-Temperature Thermostats: Our water pump kits for the Porsche 986 Boxster, 996 Carrera, and early 987 Boxster/Cayman and 997 Carrera models include an LN Engineering 160°F low-temperature thermostat. Later models have different cooling system requirements, and not all kits include a low-temperature thermostat. Please refer to the individual product descriptions for details.
Serpentine Drive Belt Options: Certain models and aftermarket modifications, particularly underdrive crank pulleys, require a different serpentine drive belt. Be sure to select the appropriate configuration when ordering. If your Porsche has an aftermarket underdrive pulley and you are unsure which belt is required, please contact us before placing your order.
Porsche Mezger Engines: Porsche 911 Turbo, GT2, and GT3 models use different engine configurations from standard Carrera models. Water pump kits listed for Carrera applications should not be assumed to fit these models.
If you’re unsure which kit is correct for your Porsche, our team is happy to help. Simply provide your vehicle’s model year, model, and engine information, or VIN, and we can assist you in identifying the appropriate components.
When Should I Change My Porsche Water Pump?
LN Engineering recommends proactive water pump service for many Porsche Boxster, Cayman, and 911 applications approximately every 4–5 years or 48,000–60,000 miles, whichever comes first, subject to model-specific guidance. For some Cayenne, Panamera, and Macan applications, our corresponding product instructions recommend approximately 4–6 years or 50,000 miles. These are preventative-maintenance recommendations, not a claim that every pump fails on that schedule.
Water pump seals, bearings, and impellers can deteriorate with age, heat cycles, coolant condition, and operation even in low-mileage vehicles. Coolant leaks, bearing noise, pulley play, elevated operating temperatures, or impeller damage are reasons to inspect the system without waiting for the scheduled interval. A failing water pump can cause coolant loss and overheating; impeller debris can also obstruct narrow cooling passages in susceptible engines. Severe overheating can lead to cylinder head damage and expensive engine repairs.
Where the original design calls for a composite/plastic impeller, LN Engineering generally favors OEM or Genuine Porsche replacement pumps using the correct composite impeller rather than substituting an unapproved heavy metal-impeller design. Excessive shaft/bearing loading or contact between an unsuitable metal impeller and the crankcase can cause substantial damage. The correct pump design must always be selected for the specific engine.
What Coolant Should I Use in My Porsche?
Replacing your Porsche’s water pump is an ideal opportunity to inspect the entire cooling system and replace aging coolant. The correct antifreeze formulation helps protect aluminum engine components, radiators, water pump seals, and other cooling-system components against corrosion and deposits. LN Engineering recommends Genuine Porsche coolant or a quality OEM-equivalent coolant that meets the requirements for your particular Porsche model and engine.
For applicable Porsche cooling systems, coolant options include Pentosin Pentofrost E Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant (1.5-liter concentrate), available from LN Engineering; Zerex G-40 Antifreeze/Coolant (part number 861526), a Si-OAT G12++/VW TL 774 G concentrate with manufacturer-documented Porsche approval for 2010 and newer applications; and Genuine Porsche coolant concentrate (part number 000 043 305 15) for the vehicles specified by Porsche. These are separate product choices, not a guarantee that any one formula is correct for every Porsche model year. Always verify the coolant specification for your vehicle before purchasing or mixing products.
Coolant Mixing and Filling: The coolant concentrates described above require dilution with distilled or deionized water in the ratio specified by the coolant manufacturer and applicable Porsche service information, commonly 50/50. Do not choose antifreeze based on its color alone, and do not mix unidentified or potentially incompatible coolants. If the coolant already in your vehicle is unknown, identify its specification and follow the appropriate drain, flush, and refill procedure rather than simply topping off with a different formulation.
When replacing a water pump or servicing the cooling system, LN Engineering recommends using a coolant vacuum-fill tool, followed by the factory-specified bleeding and verification procedure. Trapped air can cause localized overheating even with a properly functioning new water pump and thermostat.
Should I Upgrade My Porsche’s Radiators When Replacing the Water Pump?
Your Porsche’s water pump is only one component of its cooling system. Radiator condition, coolant circulation, thermostat operation, and airflow all influence engine operating temperatures. Leaves, road debris, and dirt can build up between the air-conditioning condensers and the front radiators on Porsche Boxster, Cayman, and 911 models, restricting airflow and reducing cooling efficiency. We recommend inspecting and cleaning these assemblies as part of routine maintenance.
For owners who want additional cooling capacity, particularly for track driving, sustained high-load operation, hot climates, or modified engines, LN Engineering offers CSF high-performance aluminum radiators for Porsche Boxster, Cayman, and 911 models. CSF radiators feature high-efficiency cores and all-aluminum construction with TIG-welded end tanks. Depending on the vehicle, available upgrades may include replacement left and right radiators or an additional or upgraded center radiator.
Improved radiator heat rejection can help manage coolant temperatures during demanding driving. On engines with coolant-to-oil heat exchangers, more effective coolant temperature control may also help manage engine oil temperatures. However, radiator upgrades are not a substitute for diagnosing a failing water pump, thermostat, blocked radiator, air trapped in the cooling system, or another underlying cooling-system fault.
For a street-driven Porsche with a healthy, properly maintained cooling system, factory radiators are generally adequate. For a Porsche that regularly sees track use or elevated cooling-system demands, upgrading to CSF radiators can be a worthwhile part of a comprehensive cooling-system plan. Browse our CSF Porsche Radiators and Cooling Upgrades to review available applications and confirm fitment for your specific model.
My Cayenne Coolant Pipes Are Leaking. What Should I Do?
Early Porsche Cayenne V8 models, particularly 2003–2006 Cayenne S and Turbo applications, were equipped with plastic coolant transfer pipes that can age, crack, and leak. Updated aluminum replacement pipe assemblies address this known issue. If the original plastic pipes remain in service, inspect them and plan replacement using the correct updated components; assess the water pump and thermostat at the same time. The pipes and cooling-system components must be matched to the exact model and engine.
How Do I Replace the Water Pump on a Porsche Boxster, Cayman, or 911?
The Bentley Publishers DIY video below demonstrates water pump replacement on the Porsche 911 Carrera (996), generally applicable as a procedural introduction to many 1997–2008 M96/M97 Boxster, Cayman, and naturally aspirated 911 engines. Procedures, access, fasteners, and coolant filling can differ by generation and engine. Always use the appropriate Porsche service information and the instructions for your specific vehicle.
Important cooling-system service note: Use an appropriate coolant vacuum-fill tool when draining and refilling the cooling system to minimize trapped air and subsequent overheating. LN Engineering recommends Genuine Porsche coolant or the correct OEM-equivalent coolant meeting your vehicle requirements, mixed with distilled or deionized water where applicable. Follow the factory bleeding and verification procedure, inspect for leaks, and confirm stable coolant temperature after the repair.
