Magnetic Engine & Transmission Drain Plugs for Porsche, BMW, VW, Audi, and Mercedes

All engines and transmissions should have magnetic drain plugs, but most manufacturers have omitted them from their vehicles for years. Even with that being the case, some of the OEM and aftermarket drain plugs leave much to be desired and most certainly are not created equal. Check out what makes ours the best. First we start with 6061 aluminum or 416 magnetic stainless bar stock to make our billet engine oil and transmission oil drain plugs. Then we source rare earth neodymium magnets that are the strongest you’ll find on any drain plugs currently on the market. LN Engineering offers both engine and transmission magnetic drain plugs for most Porsche, Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes, and BMW models.

How do LN Engineering magnetic drain plugs compare to OEM or typical aftermarket drain plugs?

If you’ve ever seen the existing aftermarket magnetic drain plugs sold for Porsche engines, you already know the magnet is very weak and can’t even hold the drain plug on a flat sideways surface, let alone even a sheet of paper. That’s not the case with ours! Another benefit of some of our magnetic drain plugs is that unlike the OEM ones that have a recessed dish, which is nearly impossible to clean, ours have a flat end that is much easier to clean. LN Engineering’s magnetic drain plugs are absolutely the best money can buy made even better that they are made right here in the USA. Doesn’t get any better than this. Don’t believe us, check out this video comparing our Porsche 911 drain plug to the OEM version:

What torque spec should I use when installing a magnetic drain plug?

Unless otherwise specified on the drain plug or on the supplied instructions, you should torque your magnetic drain plug to the factory torque spec using a new crush washer, seal, or gasket. Please note that aluminum drain plugs do not have an infinite service life and repeated removal and re-installation can wear out the drain plug.

What drain plug washer/seal/gasket should I use?

We supply either aluminum or copper crush washers, seals, or gaskets with our magnetic drain plugs, where applicable. There is no functional difference between an aluminum and copper washer and either should be changed for a new replacement whenever re-installing your magnetic drain plug. Sealant should not be necessary unless your oil pan or sump plate has damaged threads or sealing surface.

What is a Magnetic Drain Plug and Why Should I use one on my Engine or Transmission?

A magnetic drain plug is a type of drain plug that contains a strong magnet. It is typically used in engines and transmissions to help remove metallic debris that can collect in the oil pan. The magnet attracts small metal particles and holds them on the surface of the drain plug, preventing them from circulating through the engine or transmission and causing damage.

There are several reasons why you should use a magnetic drain plug on your engine or transmission, such as:

  • Protection against damage:Metallic debris can cause damage to the engine or transmission over time, such as wearing down bearings, gears, and other components. By removing the debris through a magnetic drain plug, you can help protect your engine or transmission from premature wear and failure.
  • Easy maintenance: Magnetic drain plugs make it easy to check for metallic debris and perform regular oil changes, as the debris will be collected on the surface of the drain plug, making it easy to see and remove.
  • Cost savings: By using a magnetic drain plug, you can help to extend the life of your engine or transmission, which can save you money on repairs and replacements in the long run.
  • Easy to install:magnetic drain plugs are easy to install and can be used in place of the factory drain plug without any modification.

Overall, using a magnetic drain plug on your engine or transmission can provide several benefits, such as protection against damage, easy maintenance, cost savings, and easy installation. They are a recommended upgrade for anyone looking to protect their engine or transmission from premature wear and failure.

Porsche Oil Change Bundles Featuring LN Engineering Magnetic Drain Plugs

LN Engineering offers oil change packages that include their exclusive full-flow spin-on oil filter adapters, oil filters, and Driven full-synthetic oils. These kits are designed for 1997-2008 Boxster, Cayman, and 911 models. The spin-on oil filter adapters from LN Engineering enable the use of standard spin-on oil filters instead of the more costly and messy cartridge-style filters. These adapters enhance oil filtration in M96 and M97 engines by eliminating the oil filter bypass, ensuring complete flow filtration.

Furthermore, LN Engineering provides spin-on oil filter adapters for 987.2, 981, and 718 Porsche Boxster and Cayman models, as well as 2003-2006 Porsche Cayenne S and Turbo models. These adapters can be purchased individually or as part of comprehensive oil change kits. These kits include Driven oils, consumables such as oil filters, drain plug gaskets, washers, sealing rings, and kits for used oil analysis.

For other Porsche models, both air-cooled and water-cooled, such as 356/912, 911, 912E, 914, 924/944/928/968, Cayenne, Panamera, and Macan, LN Engineering offers oil change kits featuring Genuine Porsche/OEM spin-on oil filters and cartridge filter inserts, along with drain plugs, gaskets, and other necessary items. Air-cooled Porsche models are equipped with Driven DT50 fully synthetic motor oil with a recommended viscosity of 15w50. Water-cooled Porsche oil change kits contain full synthetic 5w40 Driven DT40, suitable for A40 approved oils, or Driven DI40 for engines with direct injection or those requiring C40 oils.

It’s essential to remember that while oil is relatively inexpensive, engines are a significant investment. Therefore, LN Engineering recommends changing the oil every 6 months or 5,000 miles for street-driven Porsches. Their oil change bundles are designed to provide everything necessary for a DIY Porsche oil change, facilitating cost-effective and regular maintenance.
