What is Porsche Cylinder Bore Scoring?
Cylinder bore scoring refers to the presence of scuffing, scratches, grooves, and/or marks on the cylinder walls and pistons, which can have a significant impact on engine performance and longevity. In Porsche engines, cylinder bore scoring ia primarily observed in the M96 and M97 engine used in the aforementioned models, but can affect any engine with Alusil or Lokasil cylinders. Symptoms of scored cylinder bores include engine misfire, excessive oil consumption, abnormal engine noise (knocking or ticking), and sooty tailpipes. The best way to check for cylinder bore scoring is to bore scope the cylinders and to perform used oil analysis at every oil change. Watch part one of this four part series –What bore scoring is & why it can happen to 1999-08 Porsche 911s, Boxsters, & Caymans.
What causes Porsche Cylinder Bore Scoring?
Although there are many contributing factors to cylinder bore scoring in Porsche engines, poor maintenance coupled with the use of A40 approved oils with lower anti-wear and anti-friction additives are likely the root cause of the bore scoring issue and most preventable one. Bad fuel injectors, vacuum leaks, or defective mass air flow (MAF) or oxygen sensors that can cause fuel wash down of the cylinder bores also have a negative effect of the bore scoring problem in Porsche engines. Part two, Block & bore surface geometries & contributing factors to bore scoring in M96/M97 engine, further discusses the cylinder bore scoring issue and its causes.
How do you Prevent Cylinder Bore Scoring in Porsche Engines?
With most of the probably known causes for cylinder bore scoring being known and addressable, more frequent servicing and added preventative maintenance are the keys to preventing the cylinder bore scoring problem in Porsche engines. The single best thing you can do for your Porsche or any engine with Alusil or Lokasil cylinder bores is to use Driven DT40 or Driven DI40 oil and Driven Injector Defender along with Top Tier or ethanol-free fuels. In the third installment of PCA’s All about Bore Scoring series, How to prevent or slow the progression of bore scoring in your Porsche M96/M97 engine is probably the most important video all Porsche owners should watch to help learn how to prevent scored cylinder bores.
How do you fix a Porsche Engine with Cylinder Bore Scoring?
It is possible for a Porsche engine with cylinder bore scoring to initially not exhibit any of the common symptoms. Caught early, steps can be taken to mitigate the issue and extend the life of the engine until the bore scoring problem can be addressed. The only way to properly correct for scored cylinder bores is to perform and complete engine teardown and rebuild. In the final segment, How to fix bore scoring in your Porsche’s M96/M97 engine, solutions to cylinder bore scoring in Porsche engines are discussed in detail, including LN Engineering’s Nickies cylinder sleeves which fix all known cylinder issues with the M96 and M97 engine – slipped sleeve, d-chunk, and cylinder bore scoring issues that affect Porsche Boxster, Cayman, and 911 models.
