MAHLE OEM Porsche 911 Replacement Cylinders

MAHLE has supplied piston and cylinder technology to Porsche for decades, and replacement MAHLE cylinders remain an important option for aircooled Porsche 911 engine rebuilds where an original-equipment-style cast aluminum Nikasil cylinder is desired. These cylinders are produced and machined for the intended Porsche application and are available for selected engine families and bore sizes.

LN Engineering offers replacement MAHLE Porsche cylinders individually and as part of selected MAHLE Motorsport Porsche piston-and-cylinder packages. Depending on the application, the cylinder may be used as a direct replacement, as part of a displacement increase, or as part of a complete matched piston-and-cylinder set.

Cast Aluminum Nikasil Porsche Cylinders

MAHLE aircooled Porsche cylinders use cast aluminum construction with a Nikasil-type nickel-silicon-carbide bore surface. This combination provides the light weight and heat transfer expected from an aluminum Porsche cylinder together with a hard, low-friction running surface for the piston rings.

When replacing or reusing Porsche cylinders, the piston, piston rings, bore finish, and final cylinder dimensions must be treated as a matched system. Ring material and piston-to-cylinder clearance should always be based on the actual piston, cylinder, and ring package being assembled rather than transferred from a different engine combination.

Slip-In vs. Machine-In MAHLE Porsche Cylinders

Some MAHLE Motorsport Porsche piston-and-cylinder applications are available in either slip-in or machine-in configurations. A slip-in cylinder retains the standard crankcase register while using the available bore size for that application. A machine-in cylinder uses a larger spigot diameter and requires the crankcase register to be machined to accept the larger cylinder.

The larger spigot diameter of a machine-in cylinder can provide additional material and support for highly stressed applications such as turbocharged, high-rpm, or competition engines. The correct configuration depends on the engine case, desired displacement, intended use, and the piston-and-cylinder combination being installed.

Replacing a Single Porsche Cylinder vs. a Complete Set

LN Engineering generally recommends replacing Porsche cylinders as a complete set when possible. When replacing only one or a small number of cylinders, the engine builder is responsible for verifying that the replacement cylinders are compatible with the remaining cylinders in the engine.

Cylinder height grouping is especially important on aircooled Porsche engines. A replacement cylinder may require measurement and, in some cases, modification so the assembled cylinders match properly in height. Cylinder condition, bore size, deck height, head sealing surfaces, and piston compatibility should all be checked before final assembly.

When MAHLE OEM Porsche Cylinders Are No Longer Available

Some original Porsche and MAHLE cylinder applications are no longer available. To expand coverage for these engines, MAHLE Motorsport has partnered with LN Engineering on selected Porsche applications using LN Engineering Nickies cylinders with MAHLE Motorsport pistons designed specifically for the LN cylinder system.

Nickies provide a billet-aluminum alternative where an original MAHLE cylinder is unavailable or where a different bore size, cylinder configuration, or performance target is required. The choice between a replacement MAHLE cylinder and a Nickies-based solution depends on whether the goal is an original-equipment-style rebuild, a displacement change, or a performance-oriented engine build.
