Engine Rebuild Kits for Porsche Boxster, Cayman, 996 & 997 Models

RND Porsche engine rebuild kits are organized by engine code so you can select the correct parts package for your specific M96 or M97 engine. These kits are used in our own RND engine rebuild programs and bundle the commonly required hardware, bearings, seals, gaskets, timing components, and other rebuild parts using Genuine, OEM, and upgraded aftermarket components from manufacturers including ARP and LN Engineering.

Before ordering, identify your engine code and review the individual product page for exact fitment and contents. Standard, Premium, and Deluxe kits vary by engine designation and selected options, and the product photos are representative only. Components that are normally reused are not automatically included and should be inspected, measured, and replaced when necessary.

If you are unsure which engine code is in your Porsche, verify the engine designation before ordering. The individual rebuild-kit pages provide engine-specific fitment, parts lists, and upgrade information.

What Is Included in an RND Porsche Engine Rebuild Kit?

Each engine-specific kit is built around the parts commonly required during a complete M96 or M97 rebuild. Exact contents vary by engine code, but Standard kits typically include a broad selection of bearings, gaskets, seals, timing components, hardware, service items, and selected upgraded parts. Premium and Deluxe versions add more components that are commonly replaced or upgraded while the engine is apart.

  • Engine bearings, seals, and gaskets
  • Timing chains, guides, rails, and related hardware
  • ARP fasteners where specified
  • LN Engineering reliability upgrades where specified
  • Cooling and oil-system service components where specified
  • Additional sensors, hoses, tensioners, connecting rods, or billet upgrades on Premium or Deluxe kits, depending on application

Always review the individual product description for the exact contents of the Standard, Premium, or Deluxe kit you are considering.

What Is Not Included in the Engine Rebuild Kits?

RND engine rebuild kits do not include new pistons, piston rings, wrist pins, or clips. They are intended to complement the cylinder repair and piston package selected for the individual engine. Nickies cylinder sleeving, Nickies-Lite direct plating where applicable, and matching piston sets are sold separately because the correct cylinder and piston solution depends on the condition of the engine and the goals of the rebuild.

IMS Retrofit and IMS Solution kits are also not included. The correct intermediate shaft strategy depends on the engine year, engine code, and bearing configuration. Earlier engines may use serviceable dual-row or single-row bearings, while 2005 is a transition year and 2006-2008 engines use the larger bearing that is addressed during complete engine disassembly.

Complete M96/M97 Engine Rebuild Support

A rebuild kit is only one part of a complete Porsche M96 or M97 engine rebuild. LN Engineering can also provide the specialized cylinder repair, machine work, inspection, and reliability upgrades needed to address the rest of the engine while it is apart.

  • Nickies cylinder repair and sleeving for bore scoring, cracked cylinders, slipped sleeves, and other Lokasil cylinder failures
  • Intermediate shaft inspection and IMS upgrades matched to the specific engine configuration
  • Porsche engine machine shop services including dimensional inspection, balancing, crankshaft work, and engine preparation
  • Porsche cylinder head rebuilding including inspection, resurfacing, valve-guide and valve-seat work, and final testing
  • Piston ring setup, engine blueprinting, and balancing for builders who want detailed preparation work completed before assembly
  • Oil-system, cooling-system, and billet reliability upgrades for street, performance, and track-driven engines

Our Porsche engine machine shop and Porsche cylinder head rebuilding services can support both professional engine builders and individual customers.

M96/M97 Cylinder Bore Repair with Nickies

Many M96 and M97 engines are rebuilt because of cylinder bore scoring, cracked cylinders, slipped sleeves, or other Lokasil cylinder failures. LN Engineering’s M96/M97 Nickies cylinder repair and sleeving program replaces the original cylinder structure with aluminum nickel-silicon-carbide plated sleeves and is intended to provide a durable foundation for the rebuilt engine.

Nickies address the cylinder problem, while the engine rebuild kit supplies the many bearings, seals, gaskets, hardware, timing components, and service items needed to reassemble the engine. Matching pistons and rings are selected separately so the final package can be matched to the finished bore size, compression ratio, and intended use.

Plan Your Porsche M96/M97 Engine Rebuild

Before ordering a rebuild kit, review our Ultimate Porsche M96/M97 Engine Rebuild Guide. It covers cylinder repair, IMS service, bearings, connecting rods, oiling, cooling, cylinder heads, and other reliability upgrades that should be considered while the engine is apart.

Please note that RND engine kits do not include technical support for complete engine assembly. We highly recommend purchasing Rennvision’s FOCUS ON: M9X Engine Assembly DVD, produced by Jake Raby of Flat 6 Innovations and The Knowledge Gruppe. Basic assembly and break-in instructions are provided with Nickies-sleeved blocks and matching piston sets.

Porsche M96/M97 Engine Rebuild Kit FAQ

Which engine rebuild kit fits my Porsche?

Select the rebuild kit by engine code rather than by model name alone. Porsche used multiple M96 and M97 engine variants across Boxster, Cayman, 996, and 997 models, and the parts required can differ substantially between engine codes.

Are pistons and Nickies included in the rebuild kit?

No. Pistons, rings, pins, clips, Nickies sleeving or direct plating, and matching piston sets are sold separately so the cylinder repair and piston combination can be selected after the engine has been inspected and the final bore size and rebuild strategy are established.

Is the IMS bearing included?

No. The correct IMS solution depends on the engine’s bearing configuration and model year. The appropriate IMS Retrofit, IMS Solution, or rebuild strategy should be selected after the intermediate shaft configuration has been confirmed.

Can LN Engineering perform the machine work?

Yes. LN Engineering offers Porsche engine machine shop and cylinder head services, along with cylinder repair, balancing, crankshaft inspection, ring setup, engine blueprinting, and related preparation work.

Do you offer rebuild kits for other M96/M97 engines?

Yes. RND offers engine-code-specific rebuild kits for multiple Porsche Boxster, Cayman, 996, and 997 M96/M97 applications. Use the fitment table above or browse the products below to select the correct kit.
