Cylinder Heads

TYPE 4 STORE CYLINDER HEADS FOR VW TYPE 2/4 AND PORSCHE 912E/914 ENGINES

All Type 4 Store cylinder heads are the culmination of decades of research and development at Aircooled Technology and are based off 100% new castings. We are continuing that legacy with improvements including thermal barrier coated chambers and exhaust ports, as well as thermal dispersant coatings on the exterior of the cylinder heads. Along with quality Serdi valve jobs and the highest quality components and machining, you will not find better heads for your Type 4 engine anywhere else. Our cylinder heads are not available anywhere else and all Aircooled Technology engines feature the same cylinder heads sold by the Type 4 Store. Your Type 4 deserves the best!

While many products for engines are developed, brought to market and never further developed, that is not the case with the RS+. In 2019 we added thermal barrier coated chambers and exhaust ports based which based on our research help to improve valve sealing and extend valve job life by reducing how much heat goes into the heads from combustion and exhaust heat. The ceramic coatings applied to the exhaust ports can handle sustained 1400F+ temperatures and are proven on track. RS+ and LE200 Heads also feature an optional thermal dispersant coated exterior. All coatings are done by the industry leader, Calico Coatings, and really work! We are also incorporating cryogenically treated and REM superfinished valve springs for added spring life. Optional premium dual Crower springs and retainers allow for long life even at elevated revs.

Camper Special, RS+, and LE200 Chamber Volumes and Compression Ratios

The Type 4 Store CS Camper Special heads (based on new AMC Bus castings) have 49-50cc chambers and have a .5mm stepcut; you would include the depth of the 0.5mm stepcut in the total deck measurement meaning for a total 1mm deck, you would want the piston to be 0.5mm in the hole (down from the top of the cylinder in the bore).

RS+ and LE200 Cylinder Heads (based on new AA castings) have 59-60cc chamber volumes and can be special ordered with a deeper flycut to reduce chamber volumes to 57cc including a step-cut if requested. Unless otherwise specified, all combinations are designed for use with Nickies cylinders other than the 94.5mm CS Camper Special JE Piston set that requires your original German 93 or 94mm cylinders to be bored out and honed to 94.50mm.

Our shelf 94mm pistons are flat tops with no valve reliefs, 94mm Camper Special pistons have a 10.9cc dish, and the 94.5mm Camper Special pistons have a 13cc dish.

Our Camper Special Plus 96mm pistons have a 13.5cc dish and our shelf 96mm pistons for both 71mm and 78mm+ strokes both feature flat tops with no valve reliefs. To achieve a 9.0:1 compression ratio on a 2056 with 1mm of deck height will require the RS+ or LE200 cylinder heads to be fly-cut deeper to reduce chambers to 57cc’s. This needs to be specified when ordering your cylinder heads as this is special order.

Our Mountain Climber 100mm pistons have a 8.9cc dish including valve reliefs.

Our shelf 102mm JE Pistons for the 71mm stroke are flat top and for 78mm+ strokes have a 4.1cc total dish volume including valve reliefs.

The calculated compression ratios listed below are based off our Nickies cylinders and JE Pistons:

Displacement Bore Stroke CR w/ 1mm deck CR w/ 1.5mm deck
1971cc 94mm 71mm 8.25:1 7.89:1
1971cc 94mm CS 71mm 8.25:1 7.89:1
1992cc 94.5mm CS 71mm 8.10:1 7.76:1
2056cc 96mm CS 71mm 8.25:1 7.90:1
2056cc 96mm 71mm 8.64:1 8.25:1
2270cc 96mm 78.4mm 9.44:1 9.01:1
2316cc 96mm 80mm 9.61:1 9.17:1
2231cc 100mm MC 71mm 8.25:1 7.90:1
2320cc 102mm 71mm 9.49:1 9.01:1
2563cc 102mm 78.4mm 9.8:1 9.33:1
2615cc 102mm 80mm 10.03:1 9.54:1

NOTE: These are calculated compression ratios and not specific recommendations for your engine rebuild. The target compression ratio will will vary depending on application, what camshaft profile is used, fuel quality, altitude, whether you are using carburetors or fuel injection, timing, tuning, and many other variables. Pump premium unleaded fuels are required for all Type 4 Store engine kits. You should not exceed compression ratios listed above at 1mm deck for 93 or 94 octane fuels; areas with 90 or 91 octane will require the compression ratio to be lowered by increased the deck height to 1.5mm by shimming your cylinders.
