Boost Your Porsche’s Performance with Mahle’s Aftermarket Parts

Mahle cylinders and Porsche pistons

Over the past 90 years, Porsche and Mahle have enjoyed a powerful working relationship. Together these companies have developed some of the most competitive engines on the market along with some of the best sports car engines available. Mahle took the experience it gained from its OEM relationship with Porsche and developed a series of performance and racing Porsche pistons and cylinder kits.

These Porsche pistons and cylinder kits were designed for high performance applications and are modern adaptations of the original Porsche pistons and cylinder kits as well as aftermarket kits. Users may find some visual differences with the components due to modern materials and manufacturing techniques. These differences are intentional and beneficial for performance, durability, and longevity of Mahle’s aftermarket parts.

Mahle’s Porsche Pistons

Mahle’s Porsche pistons are machined from forgings with more narrow and shorter skirts to reduce weight and friction. They are then dual coated, with phosphate and also with Mahle’s proprietary Grafal skirt coating. The phosphate is a dry film lubricant designed to help protect the pin bores from galling and ring grooves from micro-welding. The Grafal anti-friction skirt coating is designed to reduce drag, wear, and noise. The kits are supplied with ring sets featuring advanced coatings and are made from stronger more durable materials, allowing for thinner piston rings with reduced friction for more horsepower. These modern materials and design accommodations allow these ring sets to provide more consistent contact with the cylinders, resulting in increased sealing and improved oil control. Mahle offers replacement and performance pistons for most aircooled and watercooled Porsche engines.

Mahle’s Porsche Aircooled Cylinders

The Mahle nikasil-plated cylinders included in Motorsports air cooled kits are produced and machined to original equipment tolerances. Where original Mahle cylinders are not available, LN Engineering supplies its billet aluminum Nickies cylinders along with Mahle Motorsport pistons. They are designed to provide increased performance, durability, and longevity for aircooled Porsche 356 and 911 engines. Some applications are available as either a slip-in or machine-in design. The slip-in cylinders are simply a larger internal bore replacement while retaining stock case and head registers. The machine-in Mahle cylinders require the engine case (and sometime the cylinder heads) to be machined to a larger bore diameter to accept their larger spigot diameter(s). The larger spigot diameter is preferable for extreme applications as with highly boosted turbo or competition use engines.

The working partnership between Porsche and Mahle going back almost 100 years can enhance your driving experience and keep your engine performing at its full potential. Likewise, LN Engineering’s 20 years of expertise in manufacturing Nickies cylinders and a close relationship with Mahle Motorsport allows for an ever increasing number of options for piston and cylinder sets to rebuild and upgrade your Porsche engine.
