SACHS Clutch Kits

Hill starts, endless traffic jams and winding roads – clutches for passenger cars are subject to a wide variety of demands every day. SACHS clutches, clutch kits and car clutch parts in OE quality get car drivers into gear easily. They ensure great convenience and are particularly reliable. SACHS clutches for passenger cars are also convincing due to their long service life. Today, the service life of individual clutch components is almost identical. The SACHS clutch kit for cars takes this into account by providing all relevant car clutch parts and components that are required for clutch replacement. These are usually the clutch pressure plate, clutch disk and clutch release bearing. The kit’s scope of supply includes a special grease for assembly that guarantees perfect, long-term car clutch functioning after the replacement. With the SACHS clutch kit for cars, clutch replacements can be performed safely, effectively and swiftly. SACHS clutch kits are available in various combinations.

LUK Dual Mass Flywheels

Dual Mass Flywheels (DMF) for Porsche Boxster, Cayman, and 911 Porsche Models

Classic combustion engines stimulate torsional vibrations in the drivetrain due to their power strokes and ignition sequences. Besides the downsizing trend reinforces these rotational irregularities of the engines, as the displacement size and number of cylinders are reduced in order to lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This leads to increased loads for all components in the drivetrain and gearbox and therefore must be effectively damped. Over 30 years ago, Schaeffler engineers developed a revolutionary technology for damping torsional vibrations in the drivetrain under the LuK product brand: the dual mass flywheel (DMF). Unlike a conventional flywheel, the DMF consists of two masses which are mounted to rotate against each other. A damping system in the form of arc springs is integrated into the DMF. Thus, it absorbs the torsional vibrations of the engine and almost completely. Today, a DMF is already installed in every second new car and transporter – and the trend is rising! More than 125 million vehicles in Europe are already equipped with a LuK DMF today. Each dual mass flywheel is individually tailored to the respective car and consists of up to 130 individual parts. Thanks to the DMF testing tool, any possible damage can also be checked and professionally assessed in the installed condition. Schaeffler is a development partner of all well-known automobile manufacturers and the undisputed market leader in original equipment, as only very few market players can offer this highly complex damping technology. Schaeffler's experts use their development lead and continuously refine their invention. The most recent example is the DMF with centrifugal pendulum, which additionally reduces vibrations in the critical area of the drive.

Should I use a Dual Mass or Single Mass Flywheel?

Depending on the vehicle, it will come equipped from the factory with a single mass flywheel (SMF) or dual mass flywheel (DMF). A dual mass flywheel is basically two flywheels with a spring in the middle which acts as a dampener. The two flywheel halves are able to move independently of each other within a limited range. The springs help absorb engine vibration which reduces wear on the transmission and the rest of the drivetrain. A dual mass flywheel provides for smooth operation and dampening of noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). A single mass flywheel provides a direct contact between the engine and clutch assembly and sometimes rely on clutch pressure plates or clutch discs containing springs to help dampen vibrations, however a single mass flywheel cannot dampen engine vibrations anywhere near as well as a dual mass flywheel. The reduced rotational mass of a single mass flywheel makes it appealing for many as it translates to a faster revving engine, but if your engine was originally fitted with a dual mass flywheel, we highly recommend retaining a DMF.

When do I need to replace my dual mass flywheel?

If you hear a lot of rattling or banging sounds from the bellhousing or additional vibration transferred from through the drivetrain to the car, more than likely your DMF has failed. Even if you don't have any symptoms of a dual mass flywheel failure, using LUK's DMF tool to measure deflection in the dual mass to verify if it is within factory tolerance. Regardless, many mechanics recommend changing the dual mass flywheel whenever the clutch is replaced, because it involves no additional labor, and just the cost of the DMF and new TTY flywheel bolts to be replaced. The rear main seal (RMS) should also be replaced with a Genuine Porsche at the same time. So basically, if you need a new clutch, it's time to also replace your dual mass flywheel. We always recommend replacing the dual mass flywheel whenever you are changing changing out the RMS, IMS bearing, and/or clutch on your Porsche Boxster, Cayman, or 911 engine. The warranty supplied with new replacement clutch kits is often voided when the flywheel is not replaced at the same time as the clutch, so that's another reason to also fit a new flywheel to your Porsche engine. Also, as a reminder, a dual mass flywheel should never be resurfaced and must be replaced if worn or damaged.
