IMS Solution

IMS Solution: The Only Permanent Solution to Porsche IMS Bearing Failures for Boxster, Cayman, and 911 Engines

The IMS bearing in your Porsche Boxster, 996, or early 997 needs to be replaced as part of preventative maintenance to prevent costly engine intermediate shaft bearing failures.

The unique approach and patented design of the IMS Solution completely eliminates ball or roller bearings, backdating the intermediate shaft bearing to a plain, oil-pressure fed plain bearing like what is used in aircooled Porsche 911 Mezger engines and in watercooled Porsche 911 GT2, 911 GT3 and 911 Turbo® Porsche models with the Mezger engine. This is not to be mistaken with the the direct oil feed (DOF) IMS bearing lubrication and cooling kit that sprays oil at a ball or roller bearing.

Eliminating the ball or roller IMS bearing by using the IMS Solution is the only permanent fix for intermediate shaft bearing issues common to all Porsche Boxster and 911 models.

The IMS Solution was developed by the team that brought you the IMS Retrofit bearing replacement kit- Flat 6 Innovations's Jake Raby and LN Engineering's Charles Navarro. This team is highly regarded as North America's foremost M96 experts. The IMS Solution became the first Patented IMS bearing kit on the market, granted US Patent 8,992,089 B2 on March 31, 2015. The IMS Solution is also protected by US Patent 9,416,697 B2 and US Patent 9,909,469. Their patented IMS Solution is the last intermediate shaft bearing your Porsche engine will ever need.

Designed for the life of your Porsche engine, the IMS Solution carries a 5 year / unlimited mileage warranty. Although more expensive than an IMS Retrofit, if you don't plan on selling your Porsche Boxster or 911 anytime soon, investing in an IMS Solution make the most sense. The IMS Solution is the only truly permanent replacement for the failure prone intermediate shaft bearing that does not have a service or replacement interval, unlike ball or roller bearing IMS bearing upgrades that need to be replaced as part of regular maintenance.

What IMS Solution bearing does my Porsche Boxster, 996, or early 997 need?

* 1997-1999 engines are equipped with dual-row bearing. 2000-2001 models can have either single- or dual-row bearing. 2002-2005 engines have a single-row bearing. Early 997 models with 2005 build dates may have the serviceable single row bearing that can be fitted with the 106-08.20 single row IMS Solution.

What IMS Solution bearing do I need for a 997 or 987 Boxster or Cayman?

*M97 engines found in model year 2006 through 2008 Porsche 997 and 987 Boxster and Cayman models have a non-serviceable IMS bearing. As full engine disassembly is required to correctly replace the bearing with an IMS Solution, we recommend removing the grease seal off the original bearing to allow the engine oil to properly lubricate the original bearing.

This patented design is the last IMS bearing you will ever need. Brought to you by the team that developed the original and often imitated IMS Retrofit™, the IMS Solution is the only permanent solution to catastrophic IMS bearing failures by complete omission of the problematic single row ball bearing and now the dual row ball bearing.

    IMS Solution as preventative maintenance:

    • IMS replacement takes an average of 10-14 hours and requires the transmission to be removed. Tipronic 911 models require the engine and transmission to be removed as a complete unit to be able to separate engine and gearbox.
    • Typically coupled with clutch and other maintenance such as replacement of RMS, AOS, Water Pump, Dual Mass Flywheel, etc.
    • If an engine failure occurs, rebuilds take 60+ hours and can cost tens of thousands of dollars to fix. Once the IMS bearing has started to fail, it cannot be replaced safely as wear metal from the original bearing can damage the replacement bearing or other internal engine components.
    • Engines must be pre-qualified prior to bearing replacement. To learn more about pre-qualification, visit https://lnengineering.com/products/ims-bearing-installation-tools/ims-pre-qualification.html

What factory bearing does my engine have?

    • 1997-1999: This engine featured a dual row bearing IMS.
    • 2000-2001: These engines came from the factory with either a dual row or a single row bearing IMS. A single row flange measures 19.27mm deep and a dual row flange measures 13.34mm deep.
    • 2002-2005: This engine featured a single row bearing IMS. Some late production 2005 models will have a non-servicable IMS.
    • 2006-2008: These engines were fitted with a larger bearing, readiliy identifiable by the 22mm center nut, that is not serviceable without a complete teardown of the engine. Removal of the IMS bearing grease seal will ensure proper lubrication of the original bearing.
    • If the engine in your car has been replaced, it will have whatever IMS bearing was in production for that model year of manufacture for the replacement engine.

What if I am upgrading from a Classic Single Row IMS Retrofit or LN Triple Row Bearing IMS Upgrade

If you are installing a 106-08.20 IMS Solution in a Boxster or 911 996 engine with a single row intermediate shaft bearing that has been previous fitted with an aftermarket IMS bearing replacement, you will need the correct circlip / snap ring to properly retain the IMS Solution bearing. If you do not have an original Porsche circlip or snap ring, please note that the ears on the circlip / snap ring can interfere with the IMS Solution, requiring a reduced ear width of approximately 0.194" to properly clear the IMS Solution flange. A replacement single row circlip / snap ring compatible with the single row IMS Solution 106-08.20 is available for purchase and is sold separately.

If you are installing a single row IMS Solution an intermediate shaft fitted with our triple row IMS upgrade, please note that some IMS shafts use a spiro-loc rather than a snap ring or circlip. If that is the case, you must reuse the existing spiroloc when fitting the 106-08.20 single row IMS Solution.

Take advantage of free tool rental when purchasing your IMS Solution from LN Engineering

Note: Free basic technical support is provided through our ticketing system. Assistance with the IMS procedure is not provided outside of directives and videos provided online. Advanced Technical Support (ATS) is a paid service where you can speak to an actual technician experienced with the IMS procedure and your vehicle to assist in case you run into a problem you cannot solve on your own.

Need to have someone install your IMS bearing?

If you aren't a do it yourselfer and are planning on having your IMS bearing changed professionally, we recommend checking out Certified Installers as your first resource for this work to be completed. We do not recommend purchasing an IMS Retrofit or IMS Solution intermediate shaft bearing kit from us unless you are doing the work yourself or the shop you are planning on using explicitly asks you to supply the parts. Most shops do not allow customers to bring in their own parts; shops need to make money on both the parts and labor to stay in business, so please purchase your LN products from the shop that is doing the work on your Boxster, Cayman, or 911 to support your local independent Porsche mechanic.

  8. IMS Solution for MY06-08 Engines. Engine disassembly required.

    SKU: 106-08.60

    $1,899.00

DESIGNED FOR THE LIFE OF THE ENGINE. 5 YEARS / NO MILEAGE LIMIT WARRANTY

NO MOVING PARTS. NO BALL BEARING. NO SERVICE INTERVAL. NO PROBLEM.

Prevent costly engine failure by eliminating problematic ball-bearings or roller-bearings by backdating your IMS with a permanent, pressure fed oil lubricated plain bearing, just like in an aircooled Porsche.

The IMS Solution became the first Patented IMS Retroit product on the market, granted US Patent 8,992,089 B2 on March 31, 2015. The IMS Solution is also protected by US Patent 9,416,697 B2 and US Patent 9,909,469.

The 106-08.60 IMS Solution intermediate shaft bearing replacement kit for model year 2006 through 2008 Porsche Boxster, Cayman, and 911 engines requires engine disassembly for installation. All engines built in and after model year 2006 will have the larger non-serviceable IMS bearing, including replacement engines from Porsche, regardless of model year the engine is being installed in. The 106-08.60 IMS Solution replaces and upgrades the factory 6305 sealed ball bearing with an oil fed, plain bearing. The kit includes our exclusive 06-08 adapter bushing that backdates your 06-08 intermediate shaft to accept our 106-08.20 Single Row IMS Solution.

If you have a Porsche 996, 997, or 987 model with an M96 or M97 engine and the larger 2006-2008 non-serviceable IMS bearing, removing the grease seal off the IMS bearing will extend the life of your intermediate shaft bearing.

Warning: Under no circumstances do we recommend or advise boring out your engine block to allow extraction and replacement of the larger, non-serviceable IMS bearing due to foreign object debris that will be generated and will compromise the engine, leading to premature bearing and engine failure. Complete engine disassembly is required to remove and replace the 06-08 non-serviceable IMS bearing safely.

Warranty requires registration and compliance with program requirements. For more information and application guidelines please visit IMS Retrofit website. Free basic technical support is provided through our ticketing system. Assistance with the IMS procedure is not provided with installation of 06-08 IMS kits as these kits are intended for professional installation only. Advanced Technical Support (ATS) is a paid service where you can speak to an actual technician experienced with the IMS procedure and your vehicle to assist in case you run into a problem you cannot solve on your own.
